ABOUT LESLEY

Lesley Craig is a multidisciplinary artist originally from Texas and currently living in Denver, CO. She works primarily in painting and ceramics. Largely pulling inspiration from both folk art and outsider art, she  incorporates the use of bold color and imperfect forms to illustrate a, somewhat, chaotic scene. She likes to balance playful imagery with slightly darker undertones, as can be seen with the use of “little fires” making appearances in several works.

Seldom planning a painting before starting it, she typically only knows what colors she would like to use, and lets that inform the rest of the painting. The use of loose brushstrokes and wandering lines are intended to convey a sense of movement and impulsivity, like working out a thought on paper. This approach allows her to focus more on the actual process of making the art and less on the final outcome of a piece. Never wanting the imagery to tell an all too obvious story, the viewer is encouraged to come up with a narrative unique to them.

In short, Lesley’s style and process heavily focuses on art as a coping mechanism to navigate more complex thoughts and feelings.
